Code of conduct

This policy document is a draft, and has not yet been formally adopted by the Society.

This code of conduct sets out how Members should behave during their time with the Society. This includes at all rehearsals, productions, social events, meetings, and other times when a Member could reasonably be expected to be representing the Society.

How we behave

We treat each other with equal respect.

We recognise that we are all individuals, and that each individual has their own strengths and weaknesses.

We act responsibly and politely to each other, and expect to be treated the same way.

We understand that we are human and make mistakes, and will do our best to correct those mistakes when they happen.

We aim to create a welcoming environment for everyone – no matter if they are a Member, part of the audience, a third-party supplier, a visitor or a guest.

We respect each other’s time by being punctual, being attentive and engaged, and being quiet when instructions are being given.

We solve problems by communicating, not by shouting.

We love humour, but never at the expense of another person.

Harrassment, bullying and discrimination

Everyone in the Society has the right to an environment which is free from harrassment, bullying and discrimination in any way, shape or form.

It is never appropriate to harrass, objectify, bully or discriminate against anyone.

It is never appropriate to make unsolicited sexual advances towards anyone.

It is never appropriate to make unwanted physical contact. We know that many roles need physical contact – sometimes intimate – but these shall always be with the full understanding and consent of those involved.

Whilst we encourage all our Members to push their limits and take on new challenges, it is never appropriate to force someone to do this.

Complaints

If you believe someone has broken this Code of Conduct, you should first raise the issue informally with any member of the Committee. If you don’t feel comfortable with this, you can also contact the Trustees, either collectively or individually.

The Society will always take complaints seriously. You can expect us to:

  • Do our best to resolve the problem.
  • Keep the details of any complaint confidential. In some serious cases we might need to involve other people, but we’ll always let you know if this is needed.
  • Where appropriate, keep you updated with any decisions we make and actions we are taking.
