Director's guide
Congratulations on being chosen to direct the next show. We’re really looking forward to working with you.
Safeguarding
As part of our ongoing commitment to safeguarding, and in response to concerns raised previously, we have put in place a set of risk mitigations and a clear reporting process. These are designed to support you and to ensure the safety and wellbeing of everyone involved in the production.
Please take some time to familiarise yourself with the guidance below. If you need help implementing any part of it, please let the committee know and we will be happy to support you.
Safeguarding Escalation Process
(To be followed for any safeguarding issues raised during a rehearsal or show)
- Report any concern initially to the stage manager.
- If the stage manager is not available, report the concern to any member of the committee.
- Agree what immediate actions need to be taken and who will carry them out.
- Write a brief report of the incident to be passed on to the committee.
Risk mitigation
Managing unwanted sexual approach during rehearsals
- Be mindful of group placement when rehearsals split into smaller groups.
- Prioritise the kitchen or other easily supervised spaces for younger groups or primarily female groups.
- Direct older or mixed groups to use the Smeaton Room, side room, or other less visible spaces.
Managing unwanted sexual approach during no-audience runs or performances
Cast members are generally together during no-audience runs, reducing opportunities for isolation. However, there may be times when individuals are alone (e.g., going outside for fresh air, using a side room, or being positioned in quieter backstage areas).
- Director should consider cast placement to reduce isolated situations.
- Stage manager will consider crew placement with the same aim.
- Known isolation points will be identified in advance, and reasonable steps taken to limit unsupervised use.
- Where isolation cannot be avoided, a buddy system may be implemented.
Thank you for helping us maintain a safe and supportive environment for all cast and crew. Your support is appreciated, and the Committee is here to assist you at any point.
